Not to be confused with movement in Harlem of black artistry, but similar in fact… The New York Renaissance was the first black professional basketball team. The played mostly in Harlem, and were established in 1923 the day before Valentine’s day.
They played all-white basketball teams as exhibitions. They won a record 88 consecutives games (so, yes the 72-10 Bulls had NOTHING on them 😉 )
Like all black teams between the periods of 1920s-1950s, the team was disbanded and the league it joined (became the Dayton Rens under the NBL) ended and merged with another league to form the current (but formerly all white) National Basketball Association.
