Day 8: Woody Strode

Please forgive me for not posting yesterday. My computer decided that it wasn’t going to work properly. It’s apparently time for a new Laptop….

Where do I begin with this extraordinary man? He graduated from UCLA and was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. He went to school there and played football with Jackie Robinson (yes, the legendary baseball player) and Kenny Washington (the first black to sign a contract with the NFL). He too played in the NFL.

As has been seen in movies such as “Remember the Titans”, Strode hadn’t experienced racism in Los Angeles; it was once he traveled east that he realized there was a major difference.

Strode won a Golden Globe for best supporting actor for his role as Draba in Spartacus (1960) fighting Kirk Douglas’s character to the death. He was also married to a relative (a neice) of the last queen of Hawaii. (*little known fact, Sheriff Woody is named for him from Toy Story.)
