Day 24: Colored People’s Lives Matter

Don’t be offended by my title, I am referring to all peoples of color. Police-related minority deaths are high with very little decrease in sight.

Here is a memoriam, an acknowledgment, a dedication to the fallen people.

Amadou Diallo, 23, New York, N.Y.—Feb. 4, 1999 <— he "fit" the description of a rapist (had his wallet on him)
Malcolm Ferguson, 23, New York, N.Y.—March 1, 2000 <—- looked like he was involved in drug activity
Prince Jones, 25, Fairfax County, Va.—Sept. 1, 2000 <— mistaken for someone else

Orlando Barlow, 28, Las Vegas, Nev.—February 28, 2003 <— the female who called the police needs her tail whooped, and I'm glad the cops got their jobs taken
*on my soapbox about this* His case is soooooooo extreme and I'm sure it happens all the time. Crazy baby mama called the police and said that he was holding seven children hostage with a shotgun. I'd arrest that woman so quick; her actions led to the death of someone unarmed all because she was mad.

Ousmane Zongo, 43, New York, N.Y.—May 22, 2003 <— killed because they thought he was pirating CDs and DVDs…. he was in instrument restoration

Henry Glover, 31, New Orleans, La.—September 2, 2005 <— Hurricane Katrina victim, shot by one officer, set on fire by another… both were sentenced, only to have their convictions overturned (McRae might have been charged for something else.. I mean he did set the dead man's body on fire.)

Sean Bell, 23, New York, N.Y.—November 25, 2006 <— shot 41 times the day before he was to get married
Oscar Grant, 22, Oakland, Calif.—January 1, 2009 <— shot by an armed security guard (while he was handcuffed) who couldn't tell the difference between a gun and taser

Victor Steen, 17, Pensacola, Fla.—October 3, 2009 <— I wasn't going to post this but… he was tased, that's not the problem. The cop ran him over in his cruiser.

Dante Price, 25, Dayton, Ohio—March 1, 2012 <– killed because instead of leaving his car where he could not stay, he got in it and drove away (these were security guards)

Rekia Boyd, 22, Chicago, Ill.—March 21, 2012 <— killed because someone thought they saw a gun, so they fired shots down an alleyway where four people were
Chavis Carter, 21, Jonesboro, Ark.—July 29, 2012 <– shot himself in a police cruiser, while handcuffed and with the opposite hand he generally uses

Carlos Alcis, 43, New York, N.Y.—August 15, 2013 <— he wasn't actually killed by police, but they raided his house looking for a CELL PHONE THIEF!!! I can't even get them to come to my apartment when someone threatens me… they go looking for CELL PHONE thieves in NY????

Jonathan Ferrell, 24, Bradfield Farms, N.C.—September 14, 2013 <– crashed his car, sought help, was apprehended and shot 10 times 😐 University of Miami football player

Jordan Baker, 26, Houston, Texas—January 16, 2014 <– because he fit the description
Yvette Smith, 47, Bastrop, Texas—February 16, 2014 <– called the police to help with a domestic disturbance, after she opened the door to let them in, they shot her. They said she had a gun and then retracted their statements.

Rumain Brisbon, 34, Phoenix, Ariz.—Dec. 2, 2014 <– because his pill bottle was mistaken for a gun….

I do not bring these names up to incite fear or anymore anger… although I know that the anger will never subside. I bring them up to keep you all well aware that we are not free yet. We still have to do our do diligent to remain safe. I excluded some names because they were in the acts of doing something illegal. That doesn't justify them being killed, but you can't do wrong and expect right. We should not live like caged animals, but we cannot forget that we live in a place where we will never be on a level playing field. Remember, Oprah is rockstar Oprah here. It didn't stop here from being profiled in Paris, or even sued in Texas.

Let these names be a reminder of where we need to be, on one accord. And let's hurry up and get there before it is everlasting too late.

And let's not forget Jordan Davis, Travyon Martin and Renisha McBride. Jordan was shot and killed because the music and his friends car was too loud at a gas station. Trayvon was stalked for miles before being confronted and upon defending himself from being harassed, was shot and killed. Renisha was shot and killed after getting into a car accident (which no one denies was caused by her alcohol consumption) and seeking help in the wrong neighborhood.

I got all the names from the website below. But I remember a lot of these people as if they occurred yesterday.
